Emily and I went with Christian to see Neko Case at The Derby last night. It was a great show, very different from the very loud rock shows I’d been to in the past 6 months. She played with a stand-up bass player and a multi-instrumentalist who played guitar, banjo, etc. Her voice just floored me, it sounded as good as it does on the records. She was very friendly with the audience, and this quip stuck with me. The bass player had a pretty big beard. Neko remarked that it was longer than usual. She said that he refers to the process of growing his beard out as “Topping it off.” They proceeded to play a few bars from Cheap Sunglasses. That is so awesome. Topping it off. I wish I had a big beard so I could grow it Billy Gibbons long and tell everyone that I was Topping it off.
