Interview w/ Bob Mould
This interview with Bob Mould is one of the best music-related interviews i’ve ever read. Both questions and answers are thoughtful, engaging, and provide insight into a very interesting career. It’s good to know that doing ok for himself, running his own record label, and I’m really excited about the new record coming out in the fall.
I guess the “one questionable song” on Copper Blue that he refers to must be Slick, but even that song would have been a standout on 95% of the rock records released from 1990 to 1996. I still maintain, 11 years later, that it is one of the most perfect records ever made. It is, without question, my single desert island disc. Here’s If I Can’t Change Your Mind, for your listening pleasure:

Ahh, Copper Blue. Easily in my top 10 albums as well. Even if “A Good Idea” sounds more like a Pixies rip than Kurt could ever produce.
I saw Bob on the ‘91 tour he mentioned in the article. He played with Billy Bragg on the Berkeley campus and was very far removed from what I had known of Hüsker Dü (namely Metal Circus).

C’mon, A Good Idea isn’t a Pixies rip, it’s a good natured tribute. Bob was very clear that it was a nod to the Pixies.

I wasn’t copying, I was flattering!
Okay okay, I’ve never seen Bob talk about that track. But I don’t care. I still love the song. And it’s not like Charles and Kurt weren’t influenced by him first.

I love that song so much.
Have you noticed that there is so much printing ink on one side of the Copper Blue CD that is makes a portable CD player shimmy when it spins? Yeah well I did.
