Emily and I went to see Erykah Badu the other night at the House of Blues. The show was expensive and sold out, but my cousin Randy hooked us up and put us on the guest list. The concert was a lot of fun, but damn was it long. We left around 1:30, after about 3 hours of her performance (Biz Markie had opened DJing), and there were still ’special guests’ waiting to come out and perform, mostly hip-hop acts that I hadn’t heard of (but who are no doubt famous). It was kind of crazy, being the night of the Grammys, and the normal $8 parking around the HOB was jacked up to $15. Supposedly there were a ton of celebrities at the show, but again being hip-hop ignorant makes it hard to recognize them. We did see Chris Connelly from MTV, that was kind of cool.
Lots of shows coming up in the next month or so in LA. Midnight Oil at the House of Blues, Grant Hart at Spaceland, Bob Mould at The El Rey, and Mark Kozelek from the Red House Painters at The House of Blues. After spending my entire concert-going youth in upstate NY, Los Angeles is an absolute concert going mecca.
