It crossed my mind that you might consider that a possibility…

Finally! Three years has been way too long, but it sounds like it might be worth it. From Paul Hilcoff’s post to the sugar-list, with regards to his phone conversation with Bob Mould:
He wanted everyone to know the latest story with the new album. Here’s
the deal: there is no deal. The latest prospect, which looked so
promising a few weeks ago, has fallen through; that label abruptly
instituted massive budget cutbacks and laid off much of its staff. Bob
says that discussions with a couple of other labels are still pending,
but he considers those to be long shots. Too many factors are working
against him these days: the state of the music industry, his age and
unrockstarlike image, his comparatively narrow fan demographic, and the
fact that the new album represents a departure from his previous work.
It all adds up to a risk nobody is eager to take, despite having nothing
but praise for the material.
Being a realist, Bob understands and accepts all this, but the situation
is frustrating to him because it’s blocking the flow of his work. He’s
got a *lot* of material backed up and he wants to get it out there. The
music pipeline, which has been pumping out tunes steadily since 1979, is
about to burst.
So… he thinks he’s just going to put all the stuff out himself — good
old DIY spirit — and sell it directly through the website and at
shows. One immediate ramification of this approach will be more goodies
for us. What Bob’s been shopping around has been, in his words, a
“hybrid” album of pop songs and more adventurous pieces. What he
proposes to release under the Granary imprint is THREE separate albums:
an album of dark acoustic material, an album of “aggressive electronic”
material, and an album of ambient/instrumental material. All three
would be released simultaneously. Pressed for a date, Bob replied, “No
later than March, one way or the other — I’ve got to get out on the
road and start touring by then.”
